Theophilus London “I Want You” Mixtape Hosted By Va$htie

“Shortly before we got his third mixtape I WANT YOU, Theophilus London released a DIY promo video for the track “Life Of A Lover”. The record loops lazily to show us a new look: pretty girls dancing with each other at a show, young dudes headnodding, the crush of cameras and hard flash that now follows us everywhere we go, a cut to Theophilus in monochrome riding in a Vespa gang through Chinatown en route to Brooklyn and then back to the dance—a mic cord drifting slowly in and out of the frame and his hand reaching out to bring a girl on stage. That is all and this is it: inspired by Marvin Gaye’s self-imposed European exile and controversial performance of the national anthem at the 1983 NBA All Star game, I WANT YOU is a collection of dark jams that restlessly examines the promise of love beyond lifestyle. Touching on LA electrofunk, UK indie, tropical escapade and obscure afropop you never knew existed, these are stories from the way we live now: missed connections and misunderstandings, video chats and retweets, returns and deliverables. We know today is all black everything but more to the point: this is now noir as we know it. And this is Theophilus London.”

M.I.A.- Born Free Video and MP3 (NSFW)

You know how M.I.A.'s music always makes you feel good, like you want to dance? Well, say goodbye to that. This is the grimiest I've ever heard her. Still great, but a big departure. If the song's grit wasn't enough for you, M.I.A. has paired up with director Romain Gavras, the man that brought us Justice's "Stress" video.

Take U To Da Movies- Learns The English

This is like every modern rap video boiled down to their lowest common denominator.

Normally suburbanite covers are an awful idea, but wait until you get to the :31 mark

blue scholars vs. empire of the sun

"Back in 2008, one of the tunes that was in (figurative) rotation on the iPhone was a little Australian hit called “Walking On A Dream” by a group called Empire Of The Sun.  Whether or not that song is garbage is up to you.  Either way, I snatched the best loops in that song, added some extra percussion, and chopped a Biggie sample for the bridge and we came up with what is now known as New People."

Mos Def Meets Reggae on “Mos Dub” Mixtape

Mashup mixtapes can often feel pretty lazy - take the beat from one song, but the lyrics from another over it, repeat as necessary - but when they work they cab make you look at some of your favorite songs in w whole new light. That's exactly the case with Max Tannone (who also did the Jay x Radiohead "Jaydiohead" project) and his new "Mos Dub" mixtape. By taking some of Mos' most def lyrical cuts and laying them over the finest that dub/reggae/dancehall has to offer, Tannone has definitely made me take a second look at tracks I've had on repeat for years now. Enjoy.

Download links and mixtape preview are below the tracklisting (samples are in parentheses):
1) Johnny Too Beef (Mos Def What's "Beef?" x The Slickers "Johnny Too Bad")
2) History Town (Mos Def & Talib Kweli "History" x Desmond Dekker "007 (Shanty Town)"
3) Ms. Vampire Booty (Mos Def "Ms. Fat Booty" x The Scientist "The Mummy Shroud")

5) Travelin' Underground (Mos Def "Travelin Man" x Lee Perry "Underground")
6) Shroud the Stars (Mos Def "Stars" x The Scientist "The Mummy Shroud")

David Byrne & Fatboy Slim- & Imelda Marcos???

'Here Lies Love' is a double-disc song cycle - improbably poignant, decidedly surreal, surprisingly thought provoking - about the rise and fall of the Philippines' notorious Imelda Marcos. It was conceived by David Byrne; composed by Byrne and British deejay/recording artist Fatboy Slim, a/k/a Norman Cook; and performed by a dream cast drawn from the worlds of indie rock, alt country, R&B and pop.
Byrne's taste in collaborators is as imaginative as it is impeccable, including Cyndi Lauper, Steve Earle, Dap-Kings vocalist Sharon Jones and Natalie Merchant. Along with vocals turns from such stars as Tori Amos and the B-52's Kate Pierson, Byrne works with rising indie rockers St. Vincent and My Brightest Diamond; New York chanteuses Nellie McKay and Martha Wainwright; and dance-music divas Roisin Murphy and Santigold. Byrne himself appears as the voice of imperialistic America on 'American Troglodyte' a send-up that wouldn't have seemed out of places in Talking Heads' True Stories.
