Maui Graced with Wheatpaste

Recently, some new wheatpaste pieces appeared on Maui's north shore, in Paia town. This collection of skulls, along with an owl, fit pretty nicely in this rustic town. Wheatpaste is fairly rare for Maui, let alone street art of this caliber. Here are the pieces I could find:

Shop Local, Shop Wailuku

Ashley from Maui Thing put this great video together featuring some local businesses from our block. It happens to also feature me acting like a moron. You hang out long enough at Requests, and it's bound to happen. Share this video by any means possible and help remind others to shop local this holiday season, and all year round.

The Grouch & Scarub SOuLeD OUT

The Living Legend's Grouch and Scarub took Maui by storm this weekend with an amazing, sold out show.

As luck would have it, the show fell on my 28th birthday. My birthday was made even sweeter when I received a text early in the day, from Grouch, saying I was on the list for the night. This would have been enough, but, much to my surprise, Grouch had something up his sleeve.
Grouch introduced me to the crowd...

He then proceeded to lead the Casanova's crowd in singing Happy Birthday to me.

It may have been one of the most amazing feelings of my life.

An amazing friend

I'm pretty sure everyone left with a smile on their face. With a line that stretched for two blocks, anyone who got their late was surely kicking themselves.

Mick Boogie – 93 Til’ Infinity Mix… Inspired by NBA JAM (Mixtape)

To accompany the release of the new NBA Jam, Mick Boogie threw together this mixtape with Dime, MAJOR, Motivation and HOMAGE celebrate the game’s legacy with classic remixes from the ’90s.

NYC-based Mick Boogie, known for his eclectic DJ sets and amazing mixtapes, is also an avid basketball fan and a video game junkie. With the recent return of the classic 90’s arcade game NBA JAM (now refreshed and remixed for 2010), Mick was inspired to put together a mixtape of classic and rare 90’s remixes that serve as the soundtrack to where we were back in the day. Being that NBA JAM dropped in 1993… Mick’s decision to call the mix “93 Til’ Infinity” was the only appropriate choice!

Our Record Store

You may already know (and may not care) that be Bahay Boys HQ is right in the heart of Requests Music, Maui's only record store still standing. I put together a little video with my new Canon t2i, for our Facebook page. The video offers up a tiny glimpse of store we so proudly call home. This is mostly to get DJs and record junkies salivating at our tasty record room. If you're ever in Maui, make it a stop.

Mayer, Mazda and Me

Last Tuesday I won tickets from Mazda to see Mayer Hawthorne live in Boston, MA, at the Paradise Rock Club. If you missed my blog about it check it out.
This morning I hope on Twitter and find this message "Mazda2 Music Tour is still going strong. Check out this week's montage video with @ReqB (that's me), @DJJazzyJeff215 and others:" I follow the link to the Mazda 2 Music Tour site to find this!:

Week three of the MAZDA2 Music Tour with Mayer Hawthorne was the best week yet. It included two sold-out shows in New York and an explosive show in Boston with special guest DJ, the legendary Jazzy Jeff.

SIDE NOTE: When traveling out of state, to an event where cameras could be present wear your friend's clothing lines (in this case 808 All Day and In4mation). They'll surely appreciate it.

MAZDA2 has also teamed Jazzy Jeff with Mayer Hawthorne to create the “Roller Boogie Remix of No Strings.” This remix will be available exclusively from MAZDA2. Find out about it first by liking them on Facebook, following them on Twitter and or visiting the tour blog. Check out the video for clips of DJ Jazzy Jeff & Mayer Hawthorne’s performances and fan interviews.

Be the first to find out when the “Roller Boogie Remix of No Strings” drops at:

Mayer x Jazzy x Heavy x Gordon

Through twitter, all things are possible.
I'm on vacation in Boston. I got word that Mayer Hawthorne would be in town at the same time as me. Curious, and bored on an Amtrak, I decided to search "Mayer" and "Boston" on Twitter to get a feel of the buzz. Up popped a contest from a Mazda dealership, the main sponsor for the concert.

The contest said I was only a retweet away from winning two VIP tickets to the concert. I was in like Flint!
The lineup was amazing: Gordon Voidwell, The Heavy, surprise guess DJ Jazzy Jeff and Mayer Hawthorne and The County. Mazda took great care of us. Here's some photos from that night.

Chromeo- "Don't Walk Away" Unplugged

Yourstru.ly Presents: Chromeo "Don't Walk Away" from Yours Truly on Vimeo.

This summer, Dave and P decided to spend their day off in San Francisco conducting an experiment, something they’d never tried before, and something they wanted Yours Truly to be a part of. Apparently, their new album Business Casual is unique to their catalogue in that it was written mostly (if not entirely) on piano. So, with the album finished, and in stores, it only seemed natural to take it back to the roots; to the chords, the keys, the claps and the vocals. “Don’t Walk Away” is the first of three pieces in this series that includes bare-bones versions of “The Right Type,” and “J’ai Claqué La Porte” and a little love letter writing thing I’ll tell you about tomorrow.

Duck Sauce- Barbra Streisand

Duck Sauce "Barbra Streisand" from Mr Goldbar on Vimeo.

Duck Sauce, the eminent producer duo comprised of A-Trak and Armand Van Helden, are primed to drop their second official single, “Barbra Streisand” on October 12th. If 3 million YouTube views of last year’s debut “aNYway” are any indicator, the official release of “Barbra Streisand” will be met with rabid anticipation as fan-recorded bootlegs have fueled blog excitement all summer.

"Barbra Streisand" continues to perfect the Duck Sauce sound, which joyously mashes classic disco house with forward-thinking dancefloor energy and expert production. A-Trak and AVH are bona fide DJ heroes whose team-ups are fueled by anything-goes samples, an almost childlike sense of fun, and 100% NYC attitude. This approach has made Duck Sauce fans-for-life out of partygoers around the globe, and will continue to convert anyone within earshot of "Barbra"'s instantly addictive, whistling hook.

For the video, director So Me (Justice, Kid Cudi, MGMT) uses the song to soundtrack a hyperactive, ecstatic New York City travelogue. Shot over a week of long nights out with A-Trak and Armand (including live footage from the Fool's Gold "Day Off" labor day block party), the clip is a pop-art adventure starring commandeered taxis and hotdog stands, sexy strangers, and a who's-who of famous friends: rappers, producers, indie rockers, graffiti writers and nightlife icons all take turns adding their own special sauce to the song, turning "Barbra Streisand" into one of this year's must-rewind clips.

Watch the video and see just how many cameos you can catch, then pick up the "Barbra Streisand" single (featuring striking sleeve art from Fool's Gold art director Dust La Rock) on October 12th.

I was already excited to see there was a new single from Mark Ronson & The Business Intl's upcoming album Record Collection and features The View's Kyle Falconer... But we were overjoyed, at Bahay Boys HQ, when we saw it also featured the long lost Spank Rock! His verse leaves you wanting more (like another full length banger). Well, here it is:

I realize this is a little out of the norm for our blog. Let me preface it by saying Ian Walsh is an amazingly talented, local bred surfer. He and I were great friends when we were little, and he was just starting to pick up sponsors. He's now gotten to the point where he hosts is own contest for kids. He's a local surf success story. And I'm glad to say he's as nice of a guy now as he was in the 6th grade. Also, big ups to The Throwdowns, a local band doing big things, for the background music.

Chromeo Can Do (Well) With Daryl Hall

Apparently Daryl Hall (of Hall & Oates, for the whipper snappers) had a web show called Live From Daryl's House. Apparently he once had Chromeo as a guest. Check them out discussing how "No Can Do" was first recorded. If you don't really care, and would rather just see the (ill) performance, skip to the 3:46 mark.

Fat Beats Closes

The news of Fat Beats closing hits pretty close to home. We are record store employees and junkies. We love this life. Slightly unnerving to see that big of a company fold its locations. I'll never forget my first trip to Fat Beats NY. I was intimidated and overwhelmed. I copped a Beasties' LP.
Fat Beats, you will be missed.
Bahay Boys

Los Angeles Times: Fat Beats to close its remaining Los Angeles and New York locations
For hip-hop heads of legal drinking age, the name Fat Beats inevitably conjures memories of teenage years spent trawling through racks of vinyl, in-store appearances with the latest underground stars (during a period when "underground" didn't require scare quotes) and encyclopedic employees often pulled from the top ranks of the Los Angeles DJ scene.

And now, the iconic hip-hop retailer will close its last two remaining brick-and-mortar locations in New York and Los Angeles -- another apparent casualty to ever-dwindling record sales and interest in vinyl among hip-hop consumers. The closures reflect the final act of contraction for a chain that had previous shuttered its locations in Amsterdam, Atlanta, Tokyo.

Maluca - China Food Mixtape FREE

"Continuing with our weekly mixtape giveaways we present you with Maluca - "China Food", mixed by me. This is the brain child of Maluca for us to create a biographical trilogy (Past, Present and Future), if you will, of her musical influences and own music. First starting with where Maluca is coming from, early influences ( Playero Music ) and early songs (Big Bad Bangs), next, we move on to where she's at, current influences ( Mambo de Calle, Gaga Music ), current songs ( Jungle Violento, Flourescent Beige ) and finally where she's going influences ( Dutch House, Vogue/Ballroom House ), songs ( Loca, Hector ). With original production from amazing producers Oliver Twizt, Mumdance, Ruckazoid, Kevin Seaton, Marcus Price and one wack one, Me. I'm pretty positive what you're about to hear, new song or old will be 99percent new to your ears. So where Maluca goes from here I don't know, but what i do know is that shes so talented, beautiful and crazy that I'll be watching and listening closely the whole way."

Mos Def Live In Maui

Last Saturday Mos Def played a show in Maui, at the Maui Theatre. My very good friend, Lia Krieg (@SocialLia) brought me in as the theater's photographer for the night (I love you for that, Lia!). Aside from one lens failing on me, the night was amazing.

Wailuku Heights Blaze

Friday moring, at midnight, two of the Bahay Boys' bahays came a block away from being lost forever in a blaze. The fire engulfed a field in Maui's Wailuku Heights area. Although no house were lost, the fire came within 50 feet of some homes.
